January Chinese New Year, Chinatown. Métro: Porte d’Ivry.

Spring Foire du Trône (late March–early May), a monster funfair at Pelouse de Reuilly, Bois de Vincennes, Métro: Porte Dorée.

April Paris Marathon ends on the Champs-Élysées.

Good Friday The Archbishop of Paris leads Procession of the Cross up the steps of Sacré-Cœur basilica, Montmartre, Métro: Anvers.

May/June French Open Tennis Championships, chic Grand Slam event, Roland-Garros stadium, Métro: Porte d’Auteuil.

June For the Fête de la Musique (Music Festival) on the 21st, there are free concerts all over Paris.

July Bastille Day (14th). Festivities include a military parade along the Champs-Élysées, a firework display at the Trocadéro and dancing on place de la Bastille. The Tour de France ends on the Champs-Élysées. Paris Cinéma, international film festival, screenings at various venues. Night-time firework displays and illuminated fountains at the Château de Versailles (mid-July–mid-Sept).

July/August Paris-Plages, the wildly successful ‘city beach’ brings sand, palm trees and a host of open-air attractions and entertainment to the banks of river and canal for four weeks. See www.paris.fr.

September Journées du Patrimoine, open days at otherwise off-limits government and private buildings.

October Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, France’s biggest horse race, Longchamp, Bois de Boulogne, Métro: Porte d’Auteuil and free shuttle-bus. Festival d’Automne, the annual festival of theatre, music and dance (until December). Nuit Blanche, museums and cultural venues open late on the first Saturday of the month, with special events laid on. See www.paris.fr.

November The arrival of Beaujolais Nouveau (third Tuesday of the month) is celebrated in bars and restaurants.

December Christmas markets, La Défense and Champs-Élysées. Notre-Dame is packed for 11pm Christmas Eve Mass. New Year’s Eve crowds pour onto the Champs-Élysées, and there are fireworks at the Trocadéro.
